Subtle Technologies 2011

welcome to Subtle Technologies 2011
a lot of news this years, both in terms of themes developed and programming. unlike the last few years, it won’t feature a specific key theme. in fact, this year the programming committee has decided to leave the topic “free”. maybe this is a sign that the festival is in a phase of transformation, as it  redefines its role in the city of toronto, and the canadian context on the one hand, and in relation to the international context on the other. one can also interpret this apparent lack of thematic direction as a way to stop for a moment and see where research and artistic work in the technosciences is going, without necessarily imposing a pre-made agenda.

in terms of programming, more news: for those who read this blog from Italy, we have secured a massive italian presence: earlier this year, I was given the great chance to invite to the festival Marco Mancuso, editor of Digicult, and Claudia D’Alonzo curator and scholar in experimental film and lapse media. For subtle Technology , they have prepared two programs under the title – umbrella ” Phenomena- a journey around audio-visual art-science,” which will open officially the festival Tomorrow night.

…But the italian presence is not over yet: friday will be the turn of Riccardo Castagna and Valentina Margaria, two scientists/musicians/artists who will present their sound nanoexperiments with the proteins of viruses conducted at the Smart Lab of the Polytechnic in Turin.
